Simon Erickson is a specialist in paediatric critical care, serving as the Head of Department at Perth Children’s Hospital, Western Australia, with additional appointments at Monash Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Victoria, and the Sydney Health Network ECMO Transport Service (KERS). His significant contributions extend to academia as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia. Simon’s expertise and leadership roles encompass various facets of paediatric critical care, including his involvement in national committees such as the National Covid-19 Evidence Taskforce and the Child and Adolescent Health Service Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). He has also been involved for many years in outreach cardiac surgical programmes in Papua New Guinea and Tanzania with Open Heart International. With a stellar track record in both clinical practice and research, Simon has made substantial impacts in paediatric critical care over the past years. His research publications, totalling 46 in the last five years (metrics), have garnered significant attention, with over a third being among the top 10% most cited papers globally. Noteworthy, among his achievements are the grants he has secured as Chief Investigator, totalling over $10 million, funding pivotal studies such as those on pulmonary hypertension and paediatric ARDS. Simon’s research findings have directly influenced clinical practice, leading to changes in the management of conditions like pulmonary hypertension and ARDS in children worldwide. Additionally, his contributions to the National Covid-19 Evidence Taskforce have played a crucial role in shaping guidelines for the assessment and management of Covid-19 in children, highlighting his impact on paediatric critical care beyond traditional research boundaries.
